Welcome to Arulmigu Vekkalaimman Temple :

Temple is Administrated by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, TamilNadu Inspected area Thirchy.About 7 kilometers (4.37 miles) from Trichy in Woraiyur, Vekkaliamman Temple is an important pilgrimage centre, and an erstwhile seat of the Cholas.

The temple is unique in that the shrine of the presiding deity has no roof. Legend has it that Goddess Vekkaliamman saved the people of Trichy from sand storm and torrential rain, and told her devotees to not build a roof over her shrine until every person living there had shelter. Daily pujas are performed here, while special pujas are done on Tuesdays and Fridays when devotees from across the city throng the shrine.

Goddess of Shakti (power) :

There is a very interesting folklore associated with the north facing idol of Goddess Vekkaliamman. Idols of deities who personify valor and chivalry, and face north are believed to bless the king with victory in war. And so, the Chola kings first visited this shrine to pray to Vekkaliamman and seek her blessings before heading to the battle field. Chola kings Pugazh Chola Nayanar and Gochenkan Chola were born in Woraiyur, but it was the latter who built this shrine to the Goddess of Shakti (Power)

Specialty :

Talented Sangam poets like Elam pon vaniganar, Eane Cherimudhamosiar, kallian kumaran, Siruganthan, Palshayanar and Maruthuvan Thamodharan were also born at this place. We come to know from Abithabi Chintamani and Ottakoothar’s Thakkayaha Parani that the ancient Woraiyur which was covered by a heavy rain of sand about twenty feet below the ground is now known as Pandamangalam.

Reputation :

Woraiyur was the capital of the Chozhas during the Sangam Age. According to Chekkizhar, a renowned Tamil poet, woraiyur contains all the great beauties of the world.

Greatness Of Temple :

Mother Vekkali Amman graces majestically sitting on a Yoga Peeta facing north. She is holding trident, Udukkai, the rope-pasam and Akshaya Patra (a vessel from which food would be constantly flowing to feed all beings) in Her four hands. Bangles, Mangalsutra, pearl chain, necklace, crown on the head are shining on Her form. Her left leg is on the demon and the right bent
